10 Lessons I Learned from Season 5 of Selfish

This weekend I spoke to 200 international bloggers at the Plaid St Conference in Washington, DC. on why they need to have a podcast. I truly believe podcasts are a powerful tool. I shared many reasons why I am glad I started this journey four years ago, but the one reason that stands out is that speaking to the numerous brave individuals over the years made a difference in me. I asked almost everyone, what is the hardest part of this journey, what is the most enjoyable part of this journey? I got to hear their highs and lows, their pros and cons, their why and why not. And when it became time for me to make a change, I was able to take the plunge because I knew others had gone before me. I am so grateful they shared their story, or I might not otherwise have been able to be brave myself.

Here are the 10 lessons or nuggets that I LOVED from Season 5 of Selfish.

On self-care:

“I recharge by doing nothing - once a week I have to have a day that I don’t have anything to do that day. That is my best self-care. In my day of doing nothing, that’s when I recharge,” said Emily Boller in episode 5.7 - Starved to Obesity.

“When you think about compassion when it comes to other people it is pretty easy. I think that’s what we mean when we say compassion, but compassion for yourself is a common hurdle,” said Nicole Sartini-Cprek in episode 5.8 - Balancing the Mind.

Achieving goals:

“Instead of trying to achieve a goal in your life, personally or professionally, if your wellbeing isn’t right focus on that first. Once you do that, everything that you try to achieve will be easier and it will be a lot more enjoyable as well,” said Tia Graham in episode 5.2 - Be Happy.

“When I look into the future and say ‘what’s next for me?’ I am saying: ‘I wonder what the universe will bring to me.’ Yeah, I still have goals and aspirations and stuff like that, but a lot of them haven’t worked out in life,” said Bill Protzman in episode 5.6 - Hitting the Note.

Positive affirmations:

“I like to remind myself, I am enough,” said Jessica Hill Powell in episode 5.3 - Be Focused.

Fulfilling dreams:

“The dreams that you are given are not happenstance, the dreams that you are given are yours for a reason. And that also means you have the power to make it happen,” said Vitale Buford in episode 5.4 - Be Real.

“You can’t be going down a road of fear if you are actually want to go down a road of bravery. You are forced to decide: bravery or fear,” said Allie Martin in episode 5.1 - Brave and Scared.

Shutting down shame:

“I would like to say it really is time for us all to really come out. For us to all stop judging people, being able to be honest and being able to say who we really are. And that’s the only way we are going to be able to move forward in the future. Meeting each other where we are, and letting each other be who we are,” said Abby Kamen in episode 5.9 - Spiritual Innovator.

“Mom guilt is like a poison or unforgiveness. When we are constantly feeling guilty, we don’t have freedom in our lives,” said Jessica Turner in episode 5.10 - Stretched Too Thin.

Competition:

“In our industry, people root for each other, in spite of the fact that they are competing against each other. Everyone wants to win the Kentucky Derby, but even people who haven’t won the Kentucky Derby are happy for the people who do win because they know how hard it is to accomplish,” said Donna Brothers in episode 5.5 - Racing Forward.
