My Why

Every business owner has their “why.” Why they decided to forgo the easy route and learn the ropes as an entrepreneur. Why they want to help clients achieve their dreams or solve their problems. I am inspired by my husband who started his HVAC business, Martin Mechanical, two years ago. He is such a meticulous worker, when he installs a new HVAC unit he cares just as much about the aesthetics of his work as he does that the unit works and does everything it promises. He knew that going into business for himself, he could take the time needed to achieve both goals, without having a company’s expectation to finish the job as fast as possible. The word that inspired him the most was freedom. The freedom to set his level of standards, the freedom to make his own schedule, and the freedom to be the boss.

I saw that he was able to achieve his goal and enjoys the life he created for himself. So after I experienced two lay-offs, I decided to take my career into my own hands. I didn’t so much have a word that inspired me, instead I had a phrase, “telling the story.” I started my podcast Selfish because I would hear amazing speakers tell their stories and I wanted to share what they had to say with everyone I knew. I realized I could do that with a podcast. In the three years that I have had my podcast, I continue to hear entrepreneurs’ stories and I want to help them better tell that story. Now with social media, podcasts, and influencers, there are many different avenues to tell a story, in addition to all the traditional media options.

Whether it’s freedom or telling the story - find your why and chase that goal! What goal are you going to work on today?
